Job Description:
Rio Tinto Technology and Innovation has a requirement to fill a Manager - Engineer, Technology & Innovation - PDI position within their Project Development and Implementation (PDI) group. The PDI group has a Project Delivery Hub located in Salt Lake City, UT USA.

Technology and Innovation's (T&I) mandate is to increase the contribution of technology to Rio Tinto's vision of industry leadership. Project Development & Implementation (PDI), as part of T&I, provides support and project delivery services across the global Rio Tinto group.

The Manager - Engineer will oversee engineering effort to verify acceptability of work product and verify that engineering resources are being used effectively; review drawings and specifications for applicability to selected remedy; provide value engineering function; provide primary point of contact for field team; ensure timely and adequate responses to RFIs.

Accountabilities:

• Provide oversight for engineering contractor in the contractor's office
• Review engineering drawings and specifications
• Ensure RFIs receive adequate responses in a timely manner and verify status of RFIs
• Verify that engineering resources are being used effectively
• Verify that design drawings and specifications are adequate for the selected remedy
• Identify aspects of engineering work that may affect safety and communicate to project team
• Ensure that requests for information received is complete with timely responses
• Identify features of the design that can be modified to provide better value
• Verify that engineering is adequate to meet the objective but not excessively over-engineered
• Visit the site periodically to inspect work completed and observe work in progress
• Provide technical and engineering support to CM staff
• Provide primary interface between field project team and contractor engineering group
• Provide input to RFI responses and design application when applicable
• Interface with CM to assure critical design and construction issues are resolved and documented

Qualifications:

• B.S. or M. S. Degree in Civil or Mining Engineering or equivalent
• Requires excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with employees at all levels of the organization
• Requires a proven ability to operate independently and in small multi-discipline teams
• Excellent planning, time organization, and problem-solving skills a must
• Record of strong safety performance
• Motivated and self-directed professional
• Requires strong reasoning and critical thinking
• Advanced Excel Skills
• Must demonstrate proficiency in computer applications, MS Office Suite
• Experience managing engineering teams
• Geotechnical experience preferred
• Engineering experience required
• Planning or scheduling experience preferred
