Job Overview
This is an excellent opportunity to broaden your consulting experience whilst contributing to growth of the firm’s business, and to its impact and influence with clients and the wider community.

As part of a small team building a growing business, you will contribute to the growth of the business by carrying out assignments and assisting in business development and related activities. Assignments will be delivered ether as part of a team or individually, with support from more senior team members.

Role
The Senior Consultant’s role can be best described in terms of the level of responsibility and accountability undertaken as follows:

  1. Has primary responsibility for coordinating and delivering significant and complex consulting services
  2. Responsible for predicting and planning future resources which may include setting up new commissions (technical or business)
  3. Responsible for meeting agreed milestones and deadlines
  4. Represents Arup/the group/ office/discipline at internal and external meetings
  5. Contributes to the development and/or implementation of plans for the longer term benefit to the firm
  6. Authors official documents e.g. letters and reports (for internal or external use)
  7. Executes responsibilities as outlined in the firm’s Quality Management System
  8. Responsible for the performance, work and development of others, providing guidance, training, motivational and directional feedback

Requirements

Knowledge, Experience & Skills:
  • Has extensive knowledge of specialist areas and keeps up to date with current industry
  • information and own knowledge and skills
  • Contributes to the development of others through sharing expertise, demonstrates design/supervisory experience
  • Has achieved a professional qualification in relevant area of expertise

Planning & Organising:
  • Liaises with other relevant stakeholders in order to organise everyone’s time efficiently
  • Realistic about own and others capabilities, ensuring others have adequate resources/training to carry out required tasks
  • Able to see the ‘big picture’ and make changes in order to meet strategic needs

Thinking & Decision Making:
  • Forecasts possibilities by weighing up information in order to predict and plan likely developments
  • Uses diverse information and provides innovative solutions to complex problems
  • Makes final decisions when consensus is not reached

Commercial Acumen:
  • Negotiates with customers/suppliers to gain favourable contractual and financial terms and conditions inline with Arup’s financial bidding processes
  • Benchmarks fees/costs against market rates and considers alternative fee structures
  • Works to minimise costs and risks and maximise income

Building Customer/Client Relationships:
  • Invests time to build strong relationships with customers and business associates
  • Tailors services to customers needs
  • Looks for issues and activities in terms of public relations potential

Communication:
  • Ability to explain complex concepts to facilitate and ensure others understanding
  • Uses various medium when presenting information
  • Adapts communication style to suit the audience
  • Clearly and concisely identifies key issues, without avoiding the difficult issues

Team Working & Leadership:
  • Supports, trains and shares expertise with junior staff
  • Is seen as accessible and approachable to others looking for help or information
  • Delegates to maximise development opportunities
  • Has an understanding of team needs and initiates morale-boosting activities
  • Is clear with directions, involving all team members and support staff

Key Skills:
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Confidence in dealing with senior people in organisations
  • Evidence of good client liaison skills
  • A proactive approach to project delivery and business development
  • Team player and ability to work across multi-disciplinary groups within Arup

Key Experience:
  • Experience in generating and winning business
  • Demonstrable experience in leading change projects
  • Experience in a healthcare or related setting would be advantageous
  • Proven track record of applying methods and tools successfully
  • Experience of working with clients at all levels of the organisation
