Position: Senior Geotechnical Engineer
Work Location: Melbourne, VIC
Job Type: Full Time

Primary Purpose of Position:
As a key member of the geotechnical division, this position involves geotechnical input at the investigations, design and construction stages of a wide range of projects including large multidisciplinary jobs such as dam, road and bridge design and construction, as well as smaller assignments: for example, provision of geotechnical advice to local governments, contractors and private clients. Duties include site inspections, desk study, fieldwork, geotechnical interpretation, analysis (geotechnical, slope stability, settlement, retaining walls, temporary works) and report writing.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Scope, organise and undertake field investigations including borehole and test pit logging, sampling and field testing
  • Analysis of geotechnical data from laboratory and insitu testing to derive suitable design parameters
  • Development of geotechnical/geological models
  • Slope stability analysis for walls, embankments and natural slopes on various sized projects
  • Design input to structures eg retaining walls and soil nail walls
  • Geotechnical design of structural footings and foundations
  • Geotechnical site advice
  • Management of design packages, including interface issues between design elements
  • Management of projects including client liaison and co-ordination of SMEC input
  • Preparation of reports
  • Research for alternative geotechnical solutions via internet and library resources
  • Preparation of proposals, expressions of interests and other marketing materials, when required
  • Adhere to design and fieldwork guidelines especially in regard to Occupational Health and Safety
  • Ensuring that filing and calculations are in accordance with the project requirements i.e. calculation packages to include Design Statement, table of contents etc
  • Responsible for the accuracy and correctness of calculations prepared for design
  • Deliver input on time, to budget and required quality

  • Quality and timeliness of reporting
  • Performance in meeting project deadlines
  • Co-operate with internal and external quality auditors for projects
  • Client satisfaction

Key Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Experience:
  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in engineering, professional memberships
  • 5 years minimum relevant industry experience
  • Familiar with geotechnical programs for slope stability analysis
  • Experience in geotechnical investigations, analysis and design
  • Project management experience
  • Understanding of basic geotechnical design principles
  • Knowledge of interface issues in specific design elements
  • Knowledge of QA and OHS procedures
  • Good time management skills with the ability to plan workloads and meet deadlines
  • Sound communication skills including report writing and liaison with relevant parties
  • Ability to work across a variety of projects simultaneously and adopt new skills and knowledge quickly and efficiently
  • Computer literate with the ability to use a variety of geotechnical computer programs
  • Familiar with relevant technical specifications and Australian Standards
