
SMEC Requires Port & Marine Senior Engineer for Newcastle, NSW

Position: Port and Marine Senior Engineer
Work Location: Newcastle, NSW
Job Type: Full Time
Primary Purpose of Position:
Assisting in the for development and management of SMEC’s Port and Marine business in Australia with the primary focus on project and resource management, project delivery, engineering and supervision of other engineers and drafters.
Key Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with global manager ports and marine and with Regional Manager, Newcastle and other Functional Managers to grow the port and marine industry business in Australia
- Develop business strategies for SMEC’s ports and marine business in conjunction with other SMEC offices’ business objectives and the overall corporate strategic objectives
- Undertake marketing activities with an emphasis on ports and marine
- Maintain existing and develop new client relationships
- Submit EOIs and proposals for ports and marine projects as required
- Win new work for the ports and marine grou
- Broaden the ports and marine group capability through recruitment
- Manage work technically and contractually to ensure that it meets technical requirements and is performed within the bounds of the organisation’s policies and procedures
- Forecast workloads and ensure necessary resources to meet project deliverables and ensure projects are adequately resourced in terms of number of staff and skill levels required
- Ensure that marine group projects are delivered on time and within budget
- Monitor staff utilisation levels and ensure staff utilisation levels are maintained at sustainable levels
- Develop and maintain internal relationships within SMEC to cross market capabilities, manage multidisciplinary projects and opportunities and source additional skills when required
- Manage panel memberships on state and local government panels; and
- Strictly adhere to SMEC’s Business Management System (BMS), Quality Management Systems (QMS) and Occupational Health & Safety (OH&S) procedures
Key Performance Indicators:
- Development and implementation of ports and marine business strategy for Western Australia
- Growth of ports and marine group business (new work won, diversity of clients)
- Growth of ports and marine group capability (recruitment and development of staff)
- Group profitability (staff utilization, project contribution, control of ports and marine group overhead)
- Implementation of business management procedures
- Brand awareness and SMEC cultural development
- Implementing SMEC’s Strategic Plan and individual business unit plans
- Implementation of SMECNet and the BMS
- Quality, professionalism, technical innovation and excellence
- Achieving budget, overhead, and contribution
- Project delivery to meet client’s TOR
- Development of networks and contribution to team goals, and building of client database
- Business development, marketing and contribution to growth
- Commercial awareness, timely submission of invoices and financial reports, reduction of lock-up
- Management of overhead budgets
- Promoting staff development and project team management
- Technical support and mentoring
- Systems development, and
- Recruitment and project mobilisation
Key Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Experience:
- Appropriate Civil Engineering degree / higher degree from accredited university
- Minimum 15 years of practical experience in port design / maritime industry
- Good interpersonal and communication skills to work effectively within a culturally diverse and multi-disciplinary environment
- Knowledge of obligations under the current SMEC BMS – document OHSPR107, and
- Sound knowledge of Quality Assurance (QA)
Specific Experience:
- Ability to write effectively in English to furnish reports and to prepare business development materials including proposals
- Design of port and marine structures in concrete and steel
- Computer literate with familiarity with Microsoft Office and structural programmes
- A good understanding of all aspects of the ports and marine infrastructure
- Demonstrated ability to successfully undertake and deliver client’s TOR, and
- Project Management and hands-on experience, encompassing administrative, commercial and technical aspects, in delivering within project based budgets and timelines.
