The Rail Engineering Strategy Team continually identify opportunities for application of new technology for operating, controlling, maintaining and monitoring our rail operations and seek out and evaluate emerging products and techniques to meet these needs. Reporting to the Manager Rail Engineering Strategy the Specialist Systems Engineer will advise the Railways Division management team to identify, investigate, evaluate and propose applications of new technology for the rail environment, particularly in the area of rail network control, communications and monitoring systems.
Other key responsibilities include:
- Analyse the existing and future business and operational context to identify the engineering concepts that would provide value in sustaining, improving and expanding the existing rail network and its operational control systems and review all levels of signalling system design
- Identify the key drivers of technology change and develop and update Railways Division's strategies for the development, prototyping and full scale introduction of new technologies
- Identify, scope and manage specific research, development and prototyping projects by application of project management skills, to determine feasibility, cost, schedule and impact of new technologies.
- Provide technical advice and support to study managers and teams where expansion studies envisage the allocation of new technology, to ensure that project scopes provide for effective introduction to service to achieve the desired benefits
- Monitor relevant equipment and systems markets and identify relevant changes to technical standards by reference to current standards and liaison regulators to support support the safe and effective introduction of new technology
To be considered for this role you will be degree qualified (bachelor's degree) in electrical, electronic, communications or control systems engineering with significant engineering experience in a railway environment in the development of projects focusing on innovative technology. You will have recent application of engineering safety management processes. A postgraduate qualification in engineering or related transport or logistics will be highly regarded as will experience in leading a small engineering and/or maintenance team.
